Sat. S.J. boys' and girls' roundup: Lenape upends Paul VI

Avery Brown led a strong push over the two middle periods and helped Lenape handed visiting Paul VI its first loss of the boys' basketball season, 52-45, in an Olympic Conference matchup on Saturday.

Paul VI (9-1), ranked No. 1 in South Jersey by The Inquirer, led by a basket after one quarter, paced by Jay Howard's 16-point game.

Lenape's (9-2) defense held Eagles standout Ron Curry to eight points - 11 below his season average - while the offense fashioned a 28-12 advantage over the second and third periods to take a 14-point lead into the fourth quarter. Brown finished with 16 points, and Tabu Gaither and Evan Ward added 10 each for the Indians.

Also in the Olympic, host Shawnee earned a 64-49 verdict over No. 4 Cherry Hill East, fueled by Ryan Bodnar's 24 points and Dan Mumford's 23.

Bishop Eustace used a 13-0 run to start the second half and got 33 points from Carson Puriefoy in beating host Cherry Hill West, 86-51.

Burlington County. Bill Raab scored a career-high 36 points to take game scoring honors away from Cinnaminson's Dan Haddon (30) and lead host new Egypt to its fourth straight win, 95-80.

Florence edged visiting Holy Cross, 43-40, in overtime with four points in the extra period by Quintin Harris (11).

Nonleague. Denzel Turbeville, a 6-foot-4 center, scored on a layup at the buzzer to give Lindenwold a dramatic 44-42 win at Hillside.

Delsea squeezed past host Haddonfield, 47-46, on Cedric Elleby's late free throw.

Gloucester Catholic's Mike Shawaryn collected 7 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists en route to a 48-32 triumph over visiting Collingswood.

Camden Catholic point guard Nicole Angelo scored 12 points, including the 1,000th of her career, as the Irish knocked off visiting Haddonfield, 42-32, in a nonleague contest. Angelo, a senior, needed 4 points to reach the milestone, and teammate Kelsey Kilpatrick scored 13 points.

Olympic. Seneca, which got 13 points from Brittany Snow, made 15 of 17 foul shots and rallied from a two-point halftime deficit to beat host Eastern, 50-36.

Isaac Williams was part of four winning relays, including a meet-record effort in the shuttle hurdles, as Willingboro captured the boys' Group 2 team title at the NJSIAA state relay championships at the Bennett Center in Toms River.

Williams joined Darius Holmes, Emmanuel Odulana and Marlon Bryan for a record time of 30.47 in the hurdles, and also took gold medals in the 4x200-meter, 4x400 and high jump relays.

Group 1 boys. Pleasantville brought home the team trophy after winning the 4x400, 4x800 and distance medley relays. Dagoberto Arias, Isaac Clark and Jacob Clark ran on all three first-place quartets.

Group 2 girls. Delsea won the team trophy for the third straight year, led by a win in the 4x200 relay from Ashley Woodards, Christina Barbaro, Lateaque Jackson and Sabrina Burrell.
