College Basketball: No. 1 Syracuse gets 20th straight victory

Kansas had been all but written off as a Final Four contender after an embarrassing loss to Davidson Dec. 19.

Syracuse 71, Pittsburgh 63 - The Orange set a school record with 20 consecutive victories to start a season, and coach Jim Boeheim won his 876th game, tying Adolph Rupp for fourth place on the all-time list for Division I coaches. Dion Waiters led Syracuse (20-0, 6-0 Big East) with 16 points. The 11-7 Panthers haven't won any of their five Big East games.

In the area: A 19-4 Ram run at the finish proved to be the difference as Philadelphia University (10-4, 6-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference) beat host Chestnut Hill, 56-42. Alssene Saintilus led the Griffins (12-7, 5-2) with 15 points.

La Salle's Tyreek Duren was named Big Five men's player of the week.

Women

Connecticut 86, North Carolina 35 - Bria Hartley scored 17 points and Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis added 15 to help the No. 3 Huskies beat the 24th-ranked Tar Heels, handing North Carolina the worst loss in school history. It only took 81/2 minutes for the Huskies (15-2) to blow it wide open. Leading 11-6, UConn scored the next 15 to take command.

In the area: Four Rams scored in double figures as Philadelphia University defeated CACC foe Chestnut Hill, 63-57, at Sorgenti Arena. Christine Wooding led PhilaU (12-4, 7-1) with 18 points. Chestnut Hill (2-13, 1-7) got a 12-point, 12-rebound night from Ebony Washington. . . . Stockton (11-4, 3-2 New Jersey Athletic Conference) placed five players in double figures for an 89-85 victory over nonconference foe Hunter College (4-10) in Galloway, N.J. The victory gave head coach Joe Fussner his 300th career win in 20 seasons at Stockton.
