Amile Jefferson gets Gatorade honor

For the second straight season, Friends' Central standout Amile Jefferson has been named Gatorade boys' basketball player of the year for Pennsylvania.

For the second straight season, Friends' Central standout Amile Jefferson has been named Gatorade boys' basketball player of the year for Pennsylvania.

The 6-foot-8, 205-pound senior forward averaged 19.9 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 2.7 blocks while leading the Phoenix to a 22-5 record and their fourth consecutive Pennsylvania Independent Schools Tournament championship.

Jefferson will participate in the McDonald's All-American Game next Wednesday at Chicago's United Center. He will leave Saturday for the event.

For being tabbed as McDonald's All-Americans, Jefferson and Prep Charter senior Kahleah Copper (20.9 ppg) will be recognized before the Orlando Magic-76ers game on April 7 at the Wells Fargo Center.

Jefferson also will compete in the Derby Festival Classic, slated for April 6 at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky. Friends' Central boss Jason Polykoff will co-coach Jefferson and the Black squad with Danny Henderson of Marcus High (Texas).

Jefferson, ranked as the 18th-best college prospect in the Class of 2012 by ESPN, is considering Duke, North Carolina State, Kentucky, Villanova, and Ohio State.
