Currell, Moorestown steamroll Washington Twp.

There's a bit of a typo on the Rutgers women's lacrosse team's news release regarding the signing of Moorestown goalie Amanda Currell.

There's a bit of a typo on the Rutgers women's lacrosse team's news release regarding the signing of Moorestown goalie Amanda Currell.

Before Rutgers coach Laura Brand-Sias cites Currell's "natural athleticism" and limitless potential, the release states that Currell "led her high school to the sectional and state group championship titles."

Led is probably not the right word.

But you'll have to excuse the oversight by the Rutgers athletic department. It's not likely a player has signed with the Scarlet Knights before earning a high school varsity letter.

Such is the lore of the Moorestown program. Even the girls on the bench are fantastic players.

"I would always joke about transferring to another high school because I wasn't starting. But I love Moorestown so much. I always wanted to stay here," Currell said after recording four saves Saturday as her Quakers, ranked No. 1 in South Jersey by The Inquirer, topped No. 4 Washington Township, 14-6.

Last year, Currell backed up Bridget Bianco, one of the best goalies ever to play high school lacrosse in New Jersey. Bianco now plays for Northwestern, the No. 1-ranked team in the nation.

"I understood that Bridget was a really good goalie, and I always looked up to her," Currell said. "I would follow her and try to learn from her. . . . So I was OK with playing behind her."

Not starting in high school didn't stop Currell from making a name for herself on the highly competitive South Jersey Select club team. There, she got the attention of numerous Division I programs.

This year, Currell is already making up for lost time on the varsity field.

Moorestown, off to a 6-0 start, has given up just 21 goals, yet to allow double digits in scoring.

Currell said she is becoming increasingly comfortable. Her best game this year was a 12-save performance in a 17-1 win over Manasquan.

Saturday at Washington Township, Currell stayed poised as an athletic Minutemaids team (3-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead.

"Amanda is a great goalie," Moorestown coach Deanna Knobloch said. "She understood her role on the team her first three years, she waited her turn, and this year she stepped up and she's been huge for us."
