S. Jersey Boys: Danzen, Cherokee capture titles in Arena golf

Cody Danzen of St. Augustine shot a 1-under-par 71 to win the individual title, and the Lafferty brothers helped Cherokee to its first team title in the 31st annual Carl Arena/Al Rifkin golf tournament on Thursday at Running Deer Golf Club in Pittsgrove.

Danzen finished two shots ahead of Vince Kwon of Cherry Hill East and Washington Township's Joe Russo, who tied for second at 73.

Blaine and Liam Lafferty joined teammates Brett Fernandes and Colin Geary in carding a 319 for Cherokee, which edged runner-up Middle Township (322).

Baseball

Joey Frey batted 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Chance Embler singled twice and scored three times, as eighth-seeded Moorestown parlayed a fast start into a 7-3 home win over No. 9 Florence in the opening round of the Burlington County League Tournament.

Colonial. Audubon coach Rich Horan celebrated his 400th career win, 7-2, at West Deptford.

Jordin Sauer's bases-loaded triple ignited a five-run fourth inning, and host Sterling went on to smother Paulsboro, 11-1.

Burlington County. Jon McGugan's fifth-inning grand slam made Cinnaminson a 4-3 winner at Bordentown.

Olympic. Jordan Glover (3 for 3, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) homered with one runner aboard in a five-run sixth inning, allowing Cherokee to put away host Camden Catholic, 11-3.

Lacrosse

Aaron Bennett's four-goal, five-assist performance topped Rancocas Valley's balanced attack, as the Red Devils ran out to a 10-1 first-quarter lead in blitzing host Steinert, 16-1, in the Colonial Valley Conference.

Colin McDonald (4 goals, 2 assists) and Jack Goracy (3 goals, 5 assists) joined in the rout.

Olympic. Zach Kaestner and Mike Reardon had hat tricks in West Deptford's 11-8 win at Clearview.
