S. Jersey Girls: Cherokee upsets Eastern in postseason lacrosse

Cherokee's Michelle Gonzales reached 100 career goals while leading the 13th-seeded Chiefs to a 14-13 upset at No. 4 seed Eastern on Monday, in a South Jersey Group 4 opening-round match of the NJSIAA girls' lacrosse tournament.

Gonzales had a game-high five goals and Lauren Thomas contributed a hat trick to a balanced attack, as Cherokee avenged a pair of regular-season losses to the Vikings.

Austyn Cuneo and Danielle LaRocca had four goals apiece for Eastern, which outscored Cherokee, 32-13, in dominating their two Olympic Conference American Division meetings.

In other South Jersey Group 4 action:

Christina Brennan scored four times to boost her career total to 101 goals, and Megan Tiernan turned in a five-goal, four-assist performance to highlight top-seeded Washington Township's 21-8 triumph over No. 16 Rancocas Valley. Alex Hlesciak's five goals led the Red Devils.

Carly Walters produced five goals and six assists as second-seeded Lenape marched past No. 15 Monroe Township, 17-4.

Third-seeded Clearview had six players contribute mutliple goals, led by Gianna Bowe with four, in a 19-5 rout of No. 14 Manalapan.

Felicia Branagan stopped 17 shots and Corrine Etter came through with three goals, but it wasn't enough to keep No. 12 seed Millville from falling, 21-9, at fifth-seeded Jackson Memorial.

South Jersey Group 2. Sixth-seeded Cinnaminson set school records for first-half goals and total goals in mauling No. 11 Middle Township, 28-11. Carleigh MacWilliams led all scorers with seven goals, while Sarah Ritter and Chelsea McDowell combined for nine goals and eight assists.

Emily Whalin scored four times and set up five goals in guiding seventh-seeded West Deptford over No. 10 Lower Cape May, 18-6.

Softball

Shayla Sweeney pitched her third no-hitter as host Haddon Heights handcuffed Overbrook, 10-0, in the Colonial Conference.

Also in the Colonial, Catherine Senopoulos (3 for 4, 4 runs, 2 RBIs) picked up her 100th career hit while pitching host Haddonfield past Gateway, 12-2.
