Tues. Pa. boys' and girls' roundup: PW edges Avon Grove

Kelly scored on the Colonials' first possession of the period after his initial driving shot was turned away by Avon Grove goalie Will Schreiner. Kelly finished with a pair of goals and one assist.

Also in District 1, Owen Evans scored three goals and assisted on two others as West Chester Henderson downed visiting Strath Haven, 10-3. Jack Glassey, Sebastian Kerslake and Spencer Rymiszewski scored twice each.

Kyle Bush scored four times and Mike Crowley added a pair of assists as Ridley eased past visiting Perkiomen Valley, 13-1. Brian Sinex won 10 faceoffs and added an assist.

Mark Guerenlian won 15 of his 18 face-offs and scored four goals to help Springfield (Delco) defeat visiting Upper Dublin, 13-6. Chris Martin added two assists and Lucas Spence scored three times. Jeremy Cavanaugh sealed the win with seven saves.

Friends Schools. Top-seeded Shipley rode Maz Obuz's two goals and four assists to ease past visiting Westtown, 18-7, in the league semifinals. Mac Gallagher and Andrew Wofford each scored four times, and Wofford added three assists.

Shipley will meet Academy of the New Church in the title game on Friday. The Lions rocked visiting George School, 12-1. Shipley has downed Academy of the New Church the last three years in the league final.

Girls' Lacrosse

Senior Kelly Cross scored six goals and assisted on four others as Upper Dublin dropped visiting Downingtown West, 20-11, in the opening round of the District 1 playoffs.

Her freshman sister, Julie, scored two goals and assisted two others. Brooke Callahan added two assists and goalie Sarah Gallagher turned away seven shots.

Also in District 1, Rachel Shaw's six goals and Brenda McDermott's two assists helped lift North Penn over visiting Spring-Ford, 16-9.

Inter-Ac. Episcopal Academy clinched at least a share of the league title as it rolled over visiting Baldwin, 20-8, on Senior Day.

Senior Madison Craft scored five goals to pace the offense. Senior Ali Singley added a goal and one assist and senior Kelly Martellucci caused five turnovers. M.C. Curran scored six goals and recorded seven draw controls. The Churchmen can claim sole possession of the title with a win on Thursday against Notre Dame.

Boys' Tennis

Senior Michael Furr scored a 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles and Unionville eased past La Salle, 4-1, at Arthur Ashe Tennis Center in the first round of the PIAA Class AAA Team Tournament. Patrick Yan and Logan Moore clinched the match with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win at second doubles.

Also in the first round, Conestoga swept the three singles matches en route to topping Dallastown, 4-1, at Exton's Tennis Addiction Sports Club. Kevin Wang won, 6-0, 6-3, at first singles and was followed by Jason Sutker's 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles. Brian Grodecki won at third singles, 6-1, 6-0.

Pennsbury dropped the first singles match before downing Hempfield, 4-1, at the Hershey Racquet Club. Dash Brown won, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0, at second singles and Taylor Illes rallied to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 at third singles.

Class AA. Senior Max Blumenthal won an easy 6-0, 6-0 win at first singles as Harriton blanked Archbishop Carroll, 5-0, in the first round at Arthur Ashe. Sam Borowski won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Zak Kivitz won, 6-0, 6-0, at third singles.

Boys' Volleyball

Sean Kropp had seven kills and Jeff Yasalonis added 23 assists and six aces as Pennsbury topped visiting Avon Grove, 3-0, in the first round of the District 1 Class AAA playoffs.

Also in District 1, Dan Ford's 15 assists and Eric Stettner's 23 assists helped lift Council Rock North past visiting Abington, 3-0.
