Pa. Boys: Friends league baseball final set

Mauri reached on a walk and stole second, and when he moved to third on an error, a throwing miscue allowed him to score in the sixth. He pitched a complete game and allowed one hit.

The Falcons advance to meet Germantown Friends in the final at noon Saturday.

Germantown Friends topped Shipley, 5-1, as Andrew Becker pitched seven innings and fanned eight. Oliver Mitchell-Boyask added a pair of runs scored and a bunt single.

Catholic. John Scheffey made his first career start on short notice and picked up the win as La Salle rolled at Father Judge, 12-1.

Scheffey, a sophomore lefty, pitched four innings and fanned five. Scheduled starter Kevin Long was scratched in the morning after coach Joe Parisi learned the senior would be late because of an advanced placement exam. Long arrived in time to pitch two scoreless innings.

Joey Gorman struck out 11 and pitched a no-hitter to lift Neumann-Goretti over visiting Bishop McDevitt, 8-0, clinching the Blue Division title. Gorman walked a batter in the second inning and faced the minimum of 21 batters.

Ches-Mont. James Simasek scored from third base on a two-out single to right field by Brandon Smethurst in the eighth inning and Avon Grove topped visiting Bishop Shanahan, 1-0. Sophomore Eric Ligda pitched seven innings and struck out five.

Lacrosse

Ian Strain scored a hat trick and assisted on two goals to lead Episcopal Academy past visiting Hill School, 14-6, in the quarterfinals of the Inter-Ac Invitational. John Garino scored twice and won 12 faceoffs.

Also in the quarterfinals, Haverford School cruised past visiting Shipley, 11-3. Henry Blynn had three assists and one goal.

Tennis

La Salle's Brian Stefanowicz captured the District 12 Class AAA singles title and La Salle's Pete DeWitt and R.J. Napolitano won the doubles title at Awbury Recreation Center.

Stefanowicz topped Grant Boyle of St. Joseph's Prep, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, in the final. DeWitt and Napolitano eased past Prep's Brendan Phillips and Anthony Mastrocola, 6-2, 6-0, in the doubles final.

Class AA. Masterman's Sam Rudovsky downed Parkway Northwest's Chris Much, 6-0, 6-0, to capture his fourth District 12 singles championship. Donald McMonagle and Nick Holder of Archbishop Carroll won the doubles title.

Friends Schools League. Shipley and Friends Central advanced to meet in the league final on Thursday at 4 p.m. Shipley edged host Abington Friends, 3-2, and Friends' Central rolled over visiting George School, 5-0.
