S. Jersey Girls: Holy Spirit pounds Millville

Holy Spirit's up-tempo offense proved too much to handle as the Spartans defeated visiting Millville, 63-26, in a Cape-Atlantic League interdivision girls' basketball game on Friday night.

"We are a very fast-paced team," said Holy Spirit coach Dennis Smith. "We aim to push the ball as much as possible. We can go 10 or 11 players deep on the bench this year because of our talent and run teams out of the gym."

Summer Crilley, a junior shooting guard, benefited most from Smith's offensive strategy, as she scored a game-high 16 points and collected seven rebounds.

Smith was thrilled with Crilley's play but was quick to point out the beauty of the team's offense: "Every game we have had somebody different lead us in points. We tell our team each night that anyone could lead us to a win."

The coach also praised his improved defense, which had struggled the previous two games.

"We had been concentrating on playing with our feet and not our hands, and tonight we were very happy with our defense," Smith said.

Millville was led by Jordan Caez's 13 points. Holy Spirit remained unbeaten at 3-0.

Elsewhere in league play, Olivia Schwartz and Lauren Legler each scored 13 points to move host Middle Township past Lower Cape May, 49-46.

Julia Duggan recorded a double-double to to lead Ocean City to a 58-20 win at Hammonton.

Duggan scored a game-high 25 points and secured 10 rebounds.

The Red Raiders defense played a strong game, holding Hammonton to single digits in each quarter.

Olympic. Cara Hardy scored 15 points and gathered 14 rebounds as host Camden Catholic won, 50-41, over Paul VI.

Cara Rocadalbo added 12 points for the Irish.
