Cardinal O'Hara tops Chichester at Coaches vs. Cancer event

Last season in the Catholic League playoffs, Sean Havink broke down his man and kicked to a teammate for a game-winning shot at the buzzer. Sunday, the Cardinal O'Hara senior guard kept the final shot for himself.

The result was the same.

Havink rose up with a hand in his face and sank a three-pointer from the right wing to give the Lions a 52-51 victory over Chichester in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament at Haverford High.

It was Havink's fourth three-pointer, giving him 16 points.

"He's a guy that kind of likes having the ball in his hands in that situation," O'Hara coach Tim Kelly said. "He can create his own shot, or he can make a good pass."

Mike Louden and Mark Plousis also made major contributions. Louden recorded 16 points and six assists. Plousis had 12 points and six rebounds.

Cardinal O'Hara led, 31-17, at halftime, but Chichester chopped into it with a 16-4 run in the third quarter. Vlenale Byrd led the Eagles with 12 points, and Manny Kamara added 10.

The one-day, showcase event featured eight area teams. In other action:

Haverford High missed three open looks to tie it at the end of the game, and Bonner-Prendergast survived with a 44-41 victory. Paul Vanderslice scored a game-high 17 points.

Haverford shot 9 for 22 from the line, including 3 for 13 in the fourth quarter. Matt Donnell's 11 points paced the Fords.

John McGill's double-double helped Ridley to a 54-33 defeat of Sun Valley. McGill scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds. Ken Bartow scored a game-high 14.

In a low-scoring contest, Springfield (Delco) rode the hot hand of Dan Rutecki to a 36-32 win over Interboro. Rutecki scored 23 points and hauled in 12 rebounds. Kenny Gamble led Interboro with 10 points.

Walter D. Palmer Winter Basketball Classic. Bartram used a tremendous third quarter to beat Audenried, 68-54, in the championship game at West Philadelphia. The Braves outscored Audenried, 28-14, in the period.

Tournament MVP Khayri Washington scored a game-high 20 points. Ral McIlwain added 19.

Devon Jacobs led Audenried with 17 points, and Qaadir Knock, who won the tournament's sportsmanship award, added 14.

That wasn't the only title Bartram took home. Senior forward Gerald Evariste won the post-tournament slam dunk contest. After his opponent missed his dunk in the final round, Evariste threw down a simple jam to grab the crown.

In an unusual third-place game, Girard College downed World Communications, 71-57. World Communications arrived with just six players, and one of them fell ill. The five remaining Stallions played nearly the entire game, flirting with foul trouble.

Zamir Andrews, Marvin Bell, Darius Moore, Robert Moore, and Ichywond Savage, the five starters for World Communications, trailed only by eight at the half before giving way in the third. Darius Moore scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. Robert Moore had 14.

For Girard College, Nicholas Jones scored 21 points, and Jihad Barnes chipped in with 19 points, 8 assists and 6 steals. Alonte Blackewell contributed eight points, eight blocks, and seven rebounds.

Girard College's Devin Clark-Walker won the post-tournament three-point contest.

A big fourth quarter propelled Palmer to a 61-55 victory over West Philadelphia in the fifth-place game. Amir Davis scored a team-high 22 points, and Kamari Peel nearly missed a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Teair Tart-Spencer picked up 10 rebounds for Palmer, which pulled away with a 19-13 spurt in the final period.

Jaleel Parlin's 22 points led West Philadelphia. Kadeem Pickett added 11.

Nonleague. Haverford School knocked off previously unbeaten Bishop McDevitt, 66-54, at home.

Semaj Reed scored 22 points, leading four players in double figures. Eric Anderson added 16, Sean Lloyd contributed 14, and Shawn Alston had 11. Reed grabbed 12 rebounds, and Anderson had nine.

Tyrell Long's 18 points carried the load for Bishop McDevitt, which had won its first seven games. Carl Garne added 11.
