Pa. Boys: Neumann-Goretti rolls in Oregon

Neither jet lag nor their overmatched opponents could stop Neumann-Goretti's Saints as they rolled into suburban Portland and rolled over Tigard (Ore.), 87-58, Wednesday in the first round of the Les Schwab Invitational.

Junior guard Ja'Quan Newton kept his hot hand, scoring 27 points for the Saints, who did not let the locals gain an ounce of momentum.

A 12-3 run in the second quarter was followed by a 13-0 stretch right after halftime, and Tigard fell by the wayside.

On Thursday afternoon, Neumann-Goretti will face off against West Linn (Ore.) in a quarterfinal.

Boardwalk Classic Showcase. Senior point guard Karonn Davis scored 20 points, dished out seven assists, and led his Friends' Central boys' basketball team to a 57-44 victory over Dobbins at the Wildwoods Convention Center.

Davis was aided by freshman forward De'Andre Hunter, who posted 18 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and a season-high nine blocks in a masterful all-around effort for the Phoenix.

Constitution Tournament. Host Ben Franklin rode junior forward Jarrett Bryant's 14 points to a 44-38 victory over visiting Layton Prep (Del.) in the first round of Constitution Tournament American Division play.

Bycil Elliot added 11 points and Synquel Cottman chipped in 10 for the Electrons, who will face Roxborough on Thursday afternoon.

Ikeal Johnson posted 20 points for the Bulldogs, but could not overcome Donovan Barnes, Raekwon Dial, and Brandon Jiles, who combined for 39 out of the Knights' backcourt.
