With the wind whipping and the rain still pelting down, Malvern Prep's soaked players celebrated one of the program's bigger upsets in recent memory.

The Friars, netting 236 yards on the ground and capitalizing on a pair of first-half muffed punts, stunned two-time defending Class AAAA state champion St. Joseph's Prep, 33-21, in a nonleague contest Friday night at Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Sophomore tailback O'Shaan Allison led the way for the visitors, carrying 29 times for 149 yards and three touchdowns. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound speedster's 13-yard dash with 6 minutes to go clinched the surprising win.

Backfield mate and junior Zac Fernandez contributed 103 rushing yards on 13 attempts. In the second quarter, he picked up 19 yards on a successful fake punt.

Down by 27-7 at intermission, the Hawks trimmed the gap to 6 on D'Andre Swift's 54-yard reception and 2-yard dive. Overall, the star junior and Division I prospect carried 22 times for 133 yards. He grabbed four of Kevin Shaw's passes for 98 yards.

Malvern's defense was anchored by linebackers Ryan Muray, Pat Finley, and Ryan Ammerman, and backs Phil DiTrolio, Mike Fay, and Rashon Lusane.

Early in the fourth quarter, with St. Joseph's at the Friars' 5, Finley picked off a pass at the 2 and returned it 58 yards to set up Allison's third tally.

Midway through the first quarter, following the Hawks' first muff, Allison darted in from the 2 for the first of Malvern's four straight scores. He broke free for a 58-yard touchdown later in the stanza to give the Friars (3-1) a 13-7 advantage.

The Hawks (2-2) gambled and came up empty on their next possession. On fourth and 4 from their 34, Swift was stopped for no gain. Fernandez found pay dirt from there to give Malvern a 13-point lead.

On the final play of the first half, the Friars gained a 20-point lead on a successful Hail Mary pass. Fay, positioned at the front of a crowded end zone, hauled in Kevin Doyle's 38-yard pass.
