Football notes: Moorestown's Gamble commits to Lehigh

Greg Gamble has played "every position from quarterback to linebacker to almost everything in between" in his football career.

Greg Gamble has played "every position from quarterback to linebacker to almost everything in between" in his football career.

He learned the game in California, and made his mark as a high school player in Moorestown.

When Gamble visited Lehigh University earlier this month, he immediately "felt right at home."

Gamble has committed to attend Lehigh on a football scholarship.

He will sign with Lehigh on Feb. 3, national signing day.

The 5-foot-11, 185-pound Gamble also had an offer from Lafayette as well as invitations to join the Michigan and Rutgers program as a preferred walk-on.

"The Rutgers situation was very interesting to me," Gamble said. "I visited and and really liked it. But once I visited Lehigh, I knew it was the place for me."

Gamble made his official visit on the weekend of Dec. 5-6.

Gamble is son of former Eagles and San Francisco 49ers executive Tom Gamble and the grandson of former Eagles executive and legendary South Jersey football man Harry Gamble.

In action limited this season by injuries, Gamble caught 24 passes for 371 yards and four touchdowns.

He said he was projected by Lehigh coaches as a wide receiver.

"I never played wide receiver before my junior year," Gamble said. "I'm excited about the future because I feel like I can get better and better."

Gamble is undecided about his major. He said he'd like to follow in his father's footsteps and find a career in football.

Gamble said the recruiting process was "stressful but exciting" but that he's relieved to have made his decision.

"It's such a big decision," Gamble said. "It's something you'll look back on your whole life."

Schiavo resigns at Haddon Heights. Ralph Schiavo has resigned after five seasons as Haddon Heights' head coach.

Schiavo said part of his reason for stepping away is the hope of spending more time with his family, especially as his two daughters are athletes.

Schiavo also indicated that he would like to coach again in the future.

"Everything I am and everything I have is because of this game," Schiavo said. "I am the man I am today because of the coaches I played for, the coaches I have coached for, the assistant coaches I've had and the players who I have had the privilege to coach.

"This game means so much to me."

Schiavo's team were 25-26 in his five seasons at Haddon Heights. His 2011 team went 8-3 and won a South Jersey Group 1 playoff game and his 2012 team went 7-3 and beat rival Haddonfield on Thanksgiving Day.

Schiavo, a Cherokee graduate who played at Rowan University, also was the head coach at Audubon for seven seasons, including in future Baltimore Raven quarterback Joe Flacco's senior year.

Hason brothers to Oberlin. Brothers Jabree and Jubrell Hason, senior defensive backs for South Jersey Group 4 champion Timber Creek, plan to attend Oberlin College in Ohio and play football.

Timber Creek coach Rob Hinson said the Hasons will be attending the school on academic scholarships but that the football coaches were so impressed with the brothers that they were flown out for an official visit a couple of weeks ago.

Oberlin plays football at the NCAA Division 3 level. The school's football program is best known for having started the playing and coaching career of John Heisman, namesake of the famous trophy

Offer for Lomax. St. Joseph senior lineman Derek Lomax recently picked up an offer from Bucknell.

Lomax, a top student who is recovering from a dislocated ankle suffered in the Dec. 6 state championship game, also has an offer from Army and has been invited to join the Michigan program as a preferred walk-on.

Robinson in All-American game. Winslow Township senior offensive lineman Devon Robinson will play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl Game at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 16.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound Robinson was a first-team All-South Jersey selection. He has committed to Illinois.
