Wood knocks off national power in Arizona

But on Thursday in Mesa, Ariz., Archbishop Wood's Matt Cerruti never capitulated.

The junior connected on a pair of free throws with 20 seconds remaining to lift the Vikings to a 56-54 win over Mountain Ridge (Ariz.) in a Visit Mesa Challenge boys' basketball game.

Mountain Ridge is the top-ranked team in Arizona and the 20th-ranked team in the nation, according to Maxpreps.

Cerruti (12 points) was 4 for 4 from the foul line in the game's final minute.

Tyree Pickron had 16 points and seven rebounds. Andrew Funk scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half.

Pete Nelson Holiday Classic. Ryan Betley scored 22 points, including 14 in the second half as Downingtown West edged Episcopal Academy, 47-45, at Widener University. George Golden added 12 points. Nick Alikakos led Episcopal Academy with 19 points. Conner Delaney and Matt Woods scored 12 points and 10 points each.

Girls' Basketball

With a minute remaining in Garnet Valley's 45-27 win over West Chester Henderson, Maddie Ireland recorded her 1,000th career point.

The senior finished with 16 points as Jaguars claimed the title at the Garnet Valley Varsity Club Holiday Invitational.

Ireland was named tournament MVP.

Freshman Emily McAteer led Garnet Valley with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Ridley Holiday Tournament. Katie Fisher scored 28 points, including the 1,000th of her career, in Strath Haven's 60-30 win over Ridley. Morgan Waters added 13 points.
