Chuck Guittar has resigned as the Lenape High School boys' basketball coach.

His teams were 218-112 in 12 seasons. His 2009 team won the Group 4 state championship.

Guittar, who played at Paul VI and Drexel, was an assistant under Bill Lange for Lenape's 2004 state championship team.

He said he decided to step down to spend more time with his family, including his 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son.

"I love November to March," Guittar said. "But March to November was becoming more and more difficult with the family and wanting to see all the kids' different activities.

"Last spring, our team was involved in a lot of things and I think I made it one time. Every other time, I was watching my son play baseball."

Guittar's teams were known for their patient offense and strong man-to-man defense. His team regularly played tight, low-scoring games against opponents from the Olympic Conference's American Division.

"I loved the battles," Guittar said. "The rivalries within the division [with Cherokee, Eastern, Cherry Hill East and Washington Township], I loved those games."

Guittar was especially proud of his team's ability to compete against top opponents, both in conference and in state-tournament play.

"I loved the thrill of the upset," Guittar said. "I loved when we were underdogs because we usually weren't a very high-scoring team and we were able to upset teams. I thrived on those games."

Guittar joined the Lenape program as an assistant under Lange in 2001.

"That's a long time," Guittar said. "I still love the game. I'll never step away from it completely. But it's the right time for me to step away and spend more time with my kids."
