Timber Creek snatches Group 4 crown

There was a lot of buzz before the season about the Timber Creek football team.

There wasn't a lot of buzz about Dan Williams and Kevin Casey.

But in the last and largest game of the season, Williams and Casey made big play after big play to lead Timber Creek to a 57-27 victory over Kingsway in the South Jersey Group 4 championship game Saturday at Rowan University.

"That was my best right there," said Williams, a junior who completed 16 of 20 passes for 261 yards and five touchdowns.

Williams, the son of Eagles assistant coach Ted Williams who took over the starting quarterback job midway through the season, completed his final seven passes and was 8 for 9 in the second half with four touchdowns.

"It's incredible," Timber Creek coach Rob Hinson said after his team won its second straight sectional title. "He [Williams] just works and works."

Casey, a senior wide receiver, fashioned a career game with seven catches for 159 yards and three touchdowns.

"Me and Kevin always had it in us," Williams said. "He works so hard in practice, and he's one of my best friends."

Timber Creek won the South Jersey Group 3 title in 2011. The Chargers moved up to Group 4 this season.

Senior Zaire Williams, a West Virginia recruit, carried 17 times for 114 yards and two touchdowns for Timber Creek (10-2), the No. 2 team in The Inquirer's South Jersey rankings.

Senior defensive end Dajaun Drennon registered three sacks for the Chargers, who won their final eight games after finishing September with a 2-2 record.

"Sometimes, a champion has to face adversity to show what he's made of," Drennon said. "That's what we did."

Junior Ray Lawry ran 18 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes for 81 yards and another score for Kingsway (8-4).

But the Dragons couldn't keep pace with the high-powered Chargers, especially with Williams zipping pass after pass to Casey, Adonis Jennings (17-yard touchdown), and Bryce Shade (five catches, 80 yards, touchdown).

"It was the best feeling I ever had in my life," Williams said. "I felt like I could do anything out there."
