Thurs. S.J. girls and boys: Camden Catholic survives scare

Camden Catholic senior Shannon McCormick scored three goals in the first half on Thursday afternoon, and it appeared that, once again, the Irish would ease to victory over Collingswood in girls' lacrosse.

Camden Catholic senior Shannon McCormick scored three goals in the first half on Thursday afternoon, and it appeared that, once again, the Irish would ease to victory over Collingswood in girls' lacrosse.

The Panthers defense clamped down in the second half, though, and it wasn't until the second overtime when McCormick's fourth goal found the net that sixth-seeded Camden Catholic eked out a 9-8 win over No. 11 Collingswood in a South Jersey Group 1 first-round game.

McCormick ripped the game-winner after beating her defender to the right. Two weeks ago, the Irish routed the Panthers, 18-8, behind six McCormick goals.

Collingswood played this one much closer and nearly pulled off the upset thanks to Krista LaMaina, who netted a hat trick, and Shauna LaMaina, who posted 22 saves.

Also in Group 1:

Gretchen Kiep and Taylor Ng each scored six goals to pace fifth-seeded Haddonfield as the Bulldogs won, 19-10, over No. 12 St. Rose Belmar.

Kylie Primeau dominated with nine goals to lead second-seeded Bishop Eustace to a 15-2 win over No. 15 Moorestown Friends.

Taylor Haynes scored seven goals and Carleigh MacWilliams added six as seventh-seeded Cinnaminson defeated No. 10 Holy Cross for the first time since 2002, 22-14.

South Jersey Group 2. Sixth-seeded Robbinsville's Emily Martin scored six goals and added an assist en route to a 17-13 win over No. 11 Sterling.

South Jersey Group 3. Top seed Moorestown blanked 16th seed Oakcrest, 19-0. Marie McCool and Tristan McGinley each scored a hat trick.

South Jersey Group 4. Eastern's Alexa Rubino netted eight goals to pace the second-seeded Vikings in a 20-3 win over No. 15 Toms River East.

Boys' Lacrosse

Kingsway's Tim Kemer scored four goals and added three assists to move the eighth-seeded Dragons past No. 9 Brick Township, 16-10, in a South Jersey Group 3 first-round game.

Kingsway led by just 5-4 at the break before it pulled away in the second half. Vinny Morgan and Cody Lauser each added three goals for the Dragons.

Also in Group 3:

Sophomore Matt Donnely netted four goals to lead sixth-seeded Clearview past No. 11 West Windsor-Plainsboro North, 11-5.

Second-seeded Shawnee eased to a 15-2 win over No. 15 Steinert behind a hat trick from Mike Vassallo.

Baseball

Josh Boyce singled to the right side of the infield to plate Zach Steinbock with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as host Cherry Hill East edged Lenape, 3-2, in an Olympic Conference game.

Also in the Olympic, Nick Browne doubled twice, homered, and drove in four runs to lead Bishop Eustace to a 17-9 win over visiting Timber Creek.

Softball

Marissa Linquist dealt from the circle and took it upon herself to provide some clutch offense in West Deptford's 2-1 win at Haddon Heights in a Colonial Conference game.

Linquist hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth after Sydney Ponto had tied the game with a blast of her own earlier in the inning. Linquist threw 32/3 innings, struck out three, and allowed four hits.

Nonleague. Callia Abbott emerged with a win in Winslow Township's 2-1 victory at Gateway in a pitchers' duel.

Abbott threw eight innings, struck out 18, and allowed two hits. Alyssa Welsh matched Abbott's hits and innings pitched and whiffed 13 in a losing effort.
