Sat. S.J. boys and girls: Egg Harbor Twp. gets first playoff win

After falling behind by two goals early, the Egg Harbor Township boys' lacrosse team rallied to make school history. Sal Avellino tallied the game-winner with 44 seconds left to lift eighth-seeded Egg Harbor over No. 9 Howell, 6-5, in the first round of the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs Saturday.

Sal Avellino tallied the game-winner with 44 seconds left to lift eighth-seeded Egg Harbor over No. 9 Howell, 6-5, in the first round of the South Jersey Group 4 playoffs Saturday.

The win gave the Eagles boys' lacrosse program its first playoff win.

Kyler Bordonaro and Ryan King each scored twice, and Christian Custodio had 14 saves for EHT.

In another Group 4 game, Tim Corn stopped 20 shots for Rancocas Valley, but the No. 11 Red Devils lost to sixth-seeded Monroe Township, 10-3.

South Jersey Group 1. Gunnar Apgar and Dan Halla each scored three goals for No. 11 Haddonfield in a 10-3 defeat of No. 6 Holmdel. Haddonfield's Jeff Sabatini stopped 10 shots.

Baseball

Tyler O'Dell struck out six, and Northern Burlington beat visiting Pemberton, 1-0, to clinch the Burlington County League Liberty Division title. O'Dell pitched four innings and allowed one hit and no walks.

Tri-County Classic. Pennsville struck for seven runs in the top of the first en route to a 12-0 triumph over Gloucester. Eric Lankenau connected on a two-run home run in the fifth.

Nonleague. Pat Hiester's two-run homer in the top of the ninth pushed Gloucester Catholic over host Cherokee, 5-3. John Murphy pitched eight innings and struck out eight for the Rams.

Nick Yambo smacked two hits and drove in two runs for Pennsauken in a 5-4 victory at Riverside.

Softball

Nicole Nixon threw a seven-hit shutout for Burlington Township, which topped New Egypt, 2-0, in a nonleague game. Nixon walked one and struck out five. Kelsey Snyder went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
