Spotlight on: Delran senior Zach Bautz

Opening night was eight weeks ago for the Delran football team.

It seems like forever to Zach Bautz.

"We're a different team now," Bautz said of the Bears.

Delran lost its opener, 21-7, to crosstown rival Holy Cross.

Since then, the Bears have ripped off six wins in a row, and they enter Friday night's game against Ewing (5-3) with a chance to earn a high seed in the Central Jersey Group 2 tournament.

"We came out light for some reason," Bautz said of the opener. "It was a tough game, but we didn't play our best. Since then, we've come together as a team."

Bautz has made a major impact. As a receiver, he has caught 20 passes for 464 yards and six touchdowns. As a defensive back, he has made three interceptions. As a punter, he has averaged 34 yards.

Bautz said Friday's game is crucial for Delran.

"It's a huge game for us," Bautz said. "We want to get a home playoff game."
