Oakcrest's Ishmael Muhammad earned more than a state championship when he won the Group 3 boys' 800 meters Saturday at the state track and field meet at South Plainfield.
Muhammad's time of 1 minute, 50.65 seconds set a meet record for the group. The previous mark, 1:51.02, was set last year by Kingsway's Darrell Manhertz.
The time was also the best in the state this year and the sixth best in the nation.
In other Group 3 action, Louis Corgliano, of Hammonton, completed the boys' 3,200 in 9:13.32, nearly four seconds ahead of the next finisher.
Group 1 state championships
The Penns Grove girls' 4x100 team set a meet record, finishing in 48.15. The previous mark was set by last year's Penns Grove team, which finished in 49.50.
Also in Group 1, Kashif Miller of Haddon Heights won the 200 in 21.67. It was his second gold of the meet, as he won the 100 on Friday.
Non-Public B state championships
Running for St. Joseph, Rocco Ordille took the boys' 200 in 21.99 for his third gold. He won the 100 and the long jump Friday.
Teammate Christopher Gabor won two golds: the 110 hurdles (15.30) and the triple jump (43 feet, 31/4 inches).
