Saturday's SJ roundup: Haddonfield and Moorestown wins field hockey state titles

Saturday's South Jersey field hockey, cross-country and football highlights.

Moorestown field hockey ended its 11-year state title drought Saturday by rolling over Warren Hills, 6-1, to win the State Group 3 final, while Haddonfield rallied from a two-goal deficit, scoring three answered, to upend Madison 4-3 to claim the Group 1 final.

Delaney Lawler and Colleen Craven combined for four goals in Moorestown's triumph. Avery Powell and Kayla Frank each contributed a goal. Quakers' goalie Lauren Pickul stopped a Mikayla Dugan penalty stroke in the opening minutes of the contest.

Bridget McCormick notched a hat trick to pace Haddonfield's offense. Sophie Popp added a goal for the Bulldawgs.

Seneca fell to Rumson-Fair Haven, 2-0, in the Group 2 title game.

Football

Cedar Creek 19, Willingboro 15. Malachi Melton's game-winning 29-yard touchdown from Louie Barrios with over four minutes remaining lifted the Pirates over the Chimeras in South Group 2 quarterfinal action. Kamaal Reed broke free for a 55-yard touchcown for the Pirates. Cedar Creek will play West Deptford Friday.

Woodrow Wilson 46, Deptford 14.

Nick Kargman completed 21 of 33 passes for 276 yards and three toucdowns to lead the Tigers into the South Group 3 semifinals with a win over the Spartans. Hydir Moore and Myheem Mccargo combined for 290 rushing yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers. Travon King hauled in two of Kargman's touchdowns. Woodrow Wilson will take on Lakewood Friday.

Bergen Catholic 56, St. Augustine 21.

Johnny Langan rushed for three toucdowns, including the game's first two, as Crusaders knocked off the Hermits in the Non-Public Group 4 quarterfinals. St. Augustine's Chris Allen threw two touchdowns to Xavier File. Shamere Collins added a 95-yard kickoff return in a losing effort.

Overbrook (N.J.) 42, Barnegat 6.

Xavier Martin delivered two touchdown passes of 20 and 45 yards to Damon Matthews to lead the Rams over the Bengals. Martin also connected with Jared Montalto on a 45-yard strike.

Boys' Cross-Country

Martin Riddell, a sophomore at Haddonfield, took home third place for State Group 2 in 16 minutes, 35 seconds.

Girls' Cross Country

Madison Coppolino, a senior at Sterling, placed third for State Group 2 in 19:24.

Alyssa Aldridge, a senior at Mainland, captured the Group 3 title in 18:18.

Katy Storti, a junior at Bishop Eustace, finished third for Non-Public A in 19:28.
