Tuesday’s Southeastern Pa. roundup: Downingtown West tops ‘Stoga in district title rematch

A rematch of last year's district championship between Downingtown West and Conestoga highlighted Tuesday's top action in Southeastern Pa.

Downingtown West defeated Conestoga, 4-1, in a rematch of last year's District 1 Class 3A field hockey championship on Tuesday.

Tatum Johnson scored two goals for Downingtown West, and Claudia Jaszczak and Anna Miller each added one goal. The Whippets won last year's District 1 title against the the Pioneers and advanced all the way to the state championship, where they lost to Penn Manor.

Katie LaBella had two goals for Archbishop Carroll in a 4-1 victory against Springfield (Delco). Grace O'Neill and Mave Riehman added the other two goals for Carroll, and Julia DiRita and Riehman each contributed an assist for the Patriots. Carroll goalie Mary Kate Kearney had four saves.

Julia Downing and Gabby Martina scored twice as Perkiomen Valley defeated Kennett, 8-2. Kelly Baittinger, Danielle Hamm, Emma Hass, and Katie Wuerstle also tallied goals for the Vikings.

West Chester Rustin defeated Penncrest, 2-0. Blaise Cugini and Shannon Drakeley both scored for the Golden Knights.

Kylie Gioia and Ava Paoletti both scored to help Marple Newtown beat Boyertown, 2-1.

Girls’ Soccer

Sophia Mahoney scored twice off assists from Liz Deal as St. Basil beat Mount St. Joseph, 3-1, in Catholic Academies League action. Delaney Gayton scored the Panthers' other goal off an assist from Ann Marie Coates, and Maria Storck led the way for St. Basil on defense.

Six different scorers found the back of the net in Philadelphia Academy Charter's 6-1 Public League victory against Olney. Kaera Kloehn, Alyssa Przychowicz, Taylor Teal, Camryn Yaletsko, Jordan Yaletsko, and Hailey Yaletsko netted goals.

Strath Haven defeated Pottsgrove, 1-0, after Danielle McNeely broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the second half. Maggie Forbes assisted on McNeely's goal, and Claire Wolgast made five saves to record the shutout.

Germantown Friends defeated Little Flower, 2-0, behind goals from Abby Galaska and Brenna McCarry.

Ashley Wald, Josie Becker, Sophia Edelbut and Grace Honeyman scored in Harriton's 4-1 win against Interboro.

Lauren Ruth scored on an assist from Zoie Baines in North Penn's 1-1 draw against Wilson-West Lawn.

Boys’ Soccer

Ryan Cole's free kick from 20 yards out proved the difference in Hatboro-Horsham's 1-0 win against Council Rock South. Goalkeeper Zack Kim posted his first shutout of the season for the Hatters.

Holy Ghost Prep and Father Judge drew 1-1 in a game that went to overtime. Holy Ghost's Nkosi Graham started the scoring in the first half off an assist by Max Giuliana. Owen Ovecka tied the game for Judge in the second before the teams held each other scoreless in overtime.

Unionville defeated Pottsgrove, 4-1. Evan Dougherty, Michael Hewes, Tommy Kelly, and Anthony Zucchero all scored for Unionville. Kyle Ketterer tallied two assists, and goalkeeper Alex Dolce made eight saves.

Cole Kendra scored one goal and assisted on two others as Upper Perk defeated Kutztown, 3-2. Ian Costanzo and Tyler Raymond also added scores, and Joe McMichael tallied an assist for Upper Perk.

Isaac Brainsky led the way with two goals in Lower Merion's 4-1 win against Plymouth Whitemarsh. Wyatt Joseph and Harrison Block also added scores for the Aces.

Episcopal Academy defeated Charlotte Country Day (N.C.), 2-1. Samuel Wilson scored off an assist by Harrison Malone, and Alec Austin recorded his first varsity goal from a pass by Gabriel Furey.

West Chester East's Driss Benslimane, Ben Delaney, Pat Stelmach all scored for the second game in a row as the Vikings beat Marple Newtown, 3-1.

West Chester Rustin's Mikkel Andersen scored the only goal as the Golden Knights topped Harriton, 1-0.

Despite eight saves from goalkeeper Ray Fortebuono, Spring-Ford lost 2-0 to Hempfield, last year's PIAA Class AAAA state runner up.
