Sat. Pa. boys' roundup: Plumstead's Seelig earns district title

Plumstead Christian freshman Kyle Seelig breezed through the District 1 Class AA boys' tennis tournament as the top seed before he edged second-seeded David Sklar of Lower Moreland, 6-3, 6-4, in the title match at the HealthPlex in Springfield on Saturday.

Seelig is the sixth-ranked 14-and-under tennis player in the nation by the United States Tennis Association. He finished second at the association's National Spring Championship earlier this month in California.

Class AAA. Kevin Wang of Conestoga and Mike Buxbaum of North Penn advanced to the championship of the District 1 singles tournament. Top-seeded Wang defeated Unionville's Michael Furr, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinal. Buxbaum, the second seed, advanced with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over third-seeded John Wu of Unionville.

Baseball

Steven Cohen scorched a two-run double in the seventh inning as Penn Charter completed a doubleheader sweep of host Perkiomen School, 3-0, in a nonleague game. Zach Wielgus complied a complete-game shutout as he struck out three, walked three and scattered three hits.

In the first game, the Quakers cruised to an easy 10-4 win. Gian Regni had a three-run homer and Jared Massaro knocked in three runs.

In other nonleague action, Ronnie Mauger reached on a walk and scored the go-ahead run in the sixth as host Boyertown topped Wilson-West Lawn, 7-6. Tyler Emel went 3 for 3 with a pair of runs scored. Chris Reigner went 2 for 2, scored once and drove in two.

Colin Hartzel's 3-for-3 performance helped lift host Episcopal Academy over St. Francis, 11-1. He finished with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Sean Phelan pieced together three innings of relief and posted the win as Devon Prep edged visiting Conestoga, 8-6.

Paul Kubat put the Tide ahead 5-4 in the fifth with a solo homer. Andy Walsh made it a 6-5 lead an inning later with an RBI single and added two steals.

Malvern Prep's Mike DeMatteis scored twice and recorded a pair of hits, but the Friars fell at Calvert Hall (Md.), 6-4. C.J. Costalas went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

Pioneer. Jeff Ashburn went 1 for 2 with three RBIs as host Phoenixville topped Perkiomen Valley, 8-0, on Mike Piazza Tribute Day. Brian Furr pitched two innings and fanned three in his first varsity game.

The former MLB catcher graduated from Phoenixville in 1986. He attended the game and spoke to the crowd during a 15-minute ceremony.

Track and Field

Academy Park's Eddie Towah captured first place in three events to highlight the Springfield (Delco) Invitational. Towah won the 100 meters (11.42 seconds), the 200 meters (23.26) and started the 4x100 relay (43.83 seconds). Also on the relay were Jeff DeVaughn, Eric Doe and Justin Brown.

Ryan Hart of Downingtown East captured a pair of field events. He won the shot put with a mark of 57-111/2 and the discus with a mark of 173-7.

Unionville Invitational. Daquan Coker of Perkiomen Valley and Unionville's Perry Hopkins each won two events. Coker won the 100 meters (11.29) and the 200 meters (22.79).
