Swenson sweeps titles in Public League track

Niager Mathis and Amy Hicks each took three individual gold medals, and the pair guided Swenson to a sweep of the boys' and girls' team titles at the two-day Public League track championships which concluded Thursday at Northeast.

The Lions piled up 91 points to beat Northeast by eight points in the boys' competition, and Swenson nearly doubled runner-up Paul Robeson's total (84) in the girls' meet with 167 points. The field events had been held Wednesday at Germantown.

Mathis dominated the sprints, winning the 100 meters in 10.76 seconds, the 200 in 21.99, and the 400 in 50.37. Teammates Haneef Hardy won the 800 in 1:57.57, and Tyrief Melfah took the 110 hurdles in 15.91, edging Simon Gratz's Fulani Freeman by 7 hundredths of a second.

The girls' meet featured Hicks' wins in the 100 (11.96), 100 hurdles (14.63), and 300 hurdles (44.13), and Swenson enjoyed a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 with Imani Harris-Quillen (25.02), Tichina Rhodes (25.26) and Amani Nesmith (25.56).

Central's Lucy Van Kleunen won the 1,600 (5:17.69) and 3,200 (11:47.05), and Overbrook's Ceaira Brown won the 400 (55.59) and 800 (2:15.24) and led off the winning 4x400 relay.
