Sat. Pa. boys and girls: North Penn blanks Strath Haven

With two out in the top of the first inning, North Penn cobbled together three straight run-scoring singles before starter Brian Maher took the hill. The senior ace allowed the Panthers (20-1) just four hits and stranded runners in the first, fourth, and fifth innings.

Tested with two on and one out in the sixth inning, Maher induced a 3-6-3 double play to escape his only jam.

Council Rock North 9, Methacton 8 - C.R. North (No. 7, North) scored five runs in the top of the 10th inning and then held the Warriors (No. 3, North) to four in the bottom of the inning to escape with the victory. Tyler Callendar slugged two home runs for North.

Pennridge 4, Boyertown 1 - Senior Evan Myers pitched a three-hitter for the Rams (No. 10, North) at Boyertown (No. 6, North).

Coatesville 5, Central Bucks East 0 - The Red Raiders (No. 4, South) went on the road and stymied East (No. 1, North) on two hits.

District 1 Class AA. Marten Pauwels hit a bases-clearing double to highlight a five-run seventh inning as Springfield (Montco) defeated Bristol, 8-1, in the championship game.

Luke Pollock went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Ian Quigg was 2 for 4 and knocked in one run, and Julian Salzar scattered four hits and struck out two over seven innings to help the Spartans win their second straight district title.

Softball

Seniors Lauren Fortunato and Taylor Lord blasted solo home runs in the fourth inning to give Agnes Irwin the Pennsylvania Independent Schools championship, as the fourth-seeded Owls slipped past second-seeded Episcopal Academy, 2-0.

"To have two seniors win the game, 2-0, was unbelievable," Agnes Irwin coach Laura Stott said. "It was a great day."

Originally scheduled at Philadelphia University, the game was moved to Episcopal because of poor field conditions.

Junior pitcher Katie Wenger breezed through her seven innings, tossing just 57 pitches.

District 1 Class AAAA quarterfinals. Caroline Scho's hit in the eighth inning gave seventh-seeded Central Bucks East a 2-1 upset of No. 2 Hatboro-Horsham.

Jackie Bilotti pitched a three-hitter to send 13th seed North Penn to a 2-0 shutout of No. 12 Pennridge. The Maidens scored their runs in the third inning on Michelle Holweger's double down the right-field line.

Lauren Quense's two-hit shutout propelled top-seeded Neshaminy to a 7-0 victory over No. 8 Downingtown East. Quense struck out nine, walked one, and drove in four runs with a home run and double.

District 1 Class AAA quarterfinals. MaryCate Butler's RBI single pushed sixth-seeded Villa Maria to a 3-2 upset of third-seeded Upper Merion.

Senior righthander Emily Shellenberger shut down the Phoenixville offense in second-seeded Nazareth Academy's 3-0 win over the 10th seed.
