Haley, Cuoci baseball's best
Jim Haley of Bonner-Prendergast is Player of the Year and Dominic Cuoci of La Salle is Pitcher of the Year.
You could say Bonner-Prendergast's Jim Haley is a once-in-a-quarter-century athlete.
Haley, a shortstop bound for Penn State, is our Player of the Year in connection with the 36th annual Daily News All-City Baseball Team.
Beyond that, he was the first guy since La Salle's Jack Stanczak to be named a Catholic League coaches' MVP in football and baseball. Stanczak earned both honors in the 1988-89 school year. Haley was tabbed in football in 2011 (he missed four games in his senior season due to injury) and this season in baseball.
Haley, who batted .459 with eight doubles, four triples, two homers and 26 RBI, also stole 10 bases and helped pace the Friars to their first perfect Catholic League regular season in school history.
Our Pitcher of the Year is Dominic Cuoci, a junior righthander for La Salle.
Cuoci posted a 9-3 record and 2.23 earned run average while leading the Explorers to the title in the CL's first double-elimination tourney. In La Salle's final two games, wins over the Red Division regular-season champ, St. Joseph's Prep, he allowed seven hits and three runs over 12 innings.
Overall, Cuoci surrendered 45 hits and 15 walks in 66 innings while striking out 50. He notched three one-hit shutouts and twice limited opponents to one run.
These teams include players from schools in the Public, Catholic and Inter-Ac leagues.
