Johnson lifts Chester at the buzzer

Mahir Johnson took a pass from Tyrell Sturdivant, dribbled up the left wing and drilled a leaning 15-footer at the buzzer to give host Chester a 62-61 boys' basketball victory over Math, Civics and Sciences in the first Fred Pickett Classic.

Chester trailed from the second quarter until Johnson's buzzer beater. Tyrell Sturdivant led the way with 21 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and a steal.

The Mighty Elephants were led by Terquin Mott's 21 points. Samir Doughty added 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Also at the Classic:

Hyking Brisbon scored 14 points but Esperanza fell to Harrisburg, 56-48.

Mercer Invitational. John Carroll scored 27 points and Matthew Foltz grabbed 14 rebounds as host Hill School downed Kent School, 72-54, in the third-place game.

Episcopal Academy finished in fifth with a 47-38 win over Masters School (N.Y.). Mike Jolaoso scored 18 points and Chris McNeal finished with 14.

Make-A-Wish Tournament. Jamar Brisbon's foul shots down the stretch helped Boys' Latin hold on and top Penn Charter, 68-64, at Germantown Academy.

Nonleague. Chris Clover hit a layup with 3:30 left in the fourth quarter and St. Joseph's Prep held on the rest of the way to down visiting Lower Merion, 46-41. Clover had 19 points, six rebounds and three assists. He scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth.

Girls' Basketball

Alex Kane made two foul shots with 10 seconds left to push Notre Dame's lead to three and it held on to win, 33-30, at nonleague foe Villa Maria.

Kane led all scorers with 11 points and Rachel Ryan had two points, 10 rebounds and five blocks.

In other nonleague action:

Mount St. Joseph won at home against West Chester Rustin, 59-42. Alex Louin had 15 points, nine rebounds, and five assists to lead the Magic. Libby Tacka and Mary Kate Ulasewicz each had 13 points.
