Central Bucks South's Josh Adams tumbled into the end zone late in the fourth quarter of a 28-27 victory over North Penn on Friday night. The student section to his left - dressed in togas - roared, and Adams' teammates rushed his way.
But before rising to his feet, Adams took a knee. This was his moment for reflection.
"I was giving credit to the man upstairs," Adams said. "I'm blessed to be able to come back and play. I feel grateful."
The Titans' senior running back missed the end of last season after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament against North Penn in the season's sixth game. After surgery, Adams said he remained positive and trusted the program dictated by his doctor and physical trainers.
If there were any doubts about his recovery, Adams dispelled them in the Suburban One National game.
He wore a brace over his left knee and juked, jived, and stiff-armed his way to 324 yards and three touchdowns on 34 carries for the Titans (4-1 overall, 2-0 conference). He attacked North Penn by lining up as a quarterback, running back, and wide receiver.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder committed in June to Notre Dame and is the Fighting Irish's only running-back recruit in the Class of 2015.
Adams rushed for six first downs in the second half. South had just one possession in the fourth quarter, and six of the eight plays were runs by Adams. The final play was his go-ahead, 10-yard touchdown.
"It's always tough getting the ball back from them," Adams said. "So we had to make sure we took care of the ball and made the best of that last possession."
North Penn (2-3, 1-1) answered Adams' touchdown with a quick 80-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard touchdown run by Jake Bevan with 44.1 seconds left.
Down a point, Knights coach Dick Beck called a timeout. North Penn chose to go for a two-point conversion, but the gamble was stuffed at the goal line.
The ensuing onside kick was recovered by South's Austin Cannon. The senior ran out of a pile with both hands gripping the ball above his head.
The toga-dressed students roared again. It was assured that the night belonged to C.B. South.
