Carroll drops first two games at City of Palms Classic

Archbishop Carroll led by nine points in the third quarter, but for the second straight day it was a disappointing finish for one of the area's top boys' basketball teams.

The Patriots - led by Ryan Daly's 21 points - fell to Sierra Canyon (Calif.), 59-55, Friday morning at the City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Derrick Jones finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Carroll played its second straight game without center Ernest Aflakpui, who had knee surgery Thursday. The 6-foot-10 senior was averaging 16 points per game. He signed a letter of intent in October to play basketball at Temple.

The Patriots opened tournament play late Thursday night with a 67-66 loss to Oak Ridge (Fla.). Jones, who is orally committed to UNLV, scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

The highlight was Jones' dunk over an Oak Ridge player. Jones dribbled in from the three-point line and leaped toward the net. The defender met him near the rim and fouled Jones. Still in the air, Jones managed to reach outward and slam the ball over the falling defender.
