Lowman twins help Del-Val Charter thump Gratz

Using Wade and Waheem Lowman as a case study, it doesn't appear that twins feel each other's pain. At least not when one misses a wide-open dunk and the other one playfully snickers.

Using Wade and Waheem Lowman as a case study, it doesn't appear that twins feel each other's pain. At least not when one misses a wide-open dunk and the other one playfully snickers.

The fraternal twins are seniors for Del-Val Charter who helped the Warriors lay waste to Simon Gratz, 74-44, Monday in Game 2 of a triple-header at Martin Luther King High during its MLK Day Invitational event.

Wade, a 6-foot-5 lefty, missed a one-handed stuff on a breakaway when the game was well out of reach in the fourth quarter.

"I started laughing because he missed that dunk," said a grinning, still-amused Waheem, who is 11 minutes younger than Wade.

"I just tried to cock it back too much," added Wade, smiling.

The mood was understandably light for Del-Val (12-4, 5-3), which made 13 of 21 shots from behind the three-point line.

Waheem, who shoots righthanded, led all scorers with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He was also 5 of 5 from three. Johnny Eden led Gratz (9-6, 4-4) with 12 points.

"We've been working and been in the gym every day, trying to get better," Waheem said. His southpaw brother finished with 15 points, six rebounds, four steals, and a blocked shot.

Wade, who plays center, also stepped out and made a deep jumper from the wing, but his size-13 shoes just breached the line.

The brothers transferred this season from Imhotep Charter, where they likely would not have played as much. The Panthers (11-2, 6-0) lead the Public League's Division A while Del-Val is in second place.

"I've stepped up as a scorer, shooter and a driver," Waheem said. "I stepped up defensively, too."

Wade added: "I just feel like I'm excelling at what my coach tells me to do - score the ball, get rebounds, defend the basket, and play my game."

In Game 1 of the triple-header, Audenried held off Dobbins, 58-45. Nisheem McNeal-Wright led all scorers with 21 points. He added eight steals, six assists, and three rebounds.

Host Martin Luther King High honored former NBA players and Philadelphia high school basketball stars Rasheed Wallace, Alvin Williams, and Cutino Mobley (the only one who could not attend).
