Fight between Edison players halts game vs. Overbrook

Edison's losing troubles this season apparently led to a fight between teammates at halftime of the nonleague game.

Friday afternoon's Overbrook vs. Thomas Edison nonleague football game was halted at halftime with Overbrook ahead, 22-0, after an altercation between Edison teammates occurred on the field as the team returned from its locker room.

Punches were exchanged between two Edison players, who were separated by teammates.

School security officials already present at the game eventually led both players from the field.

Edison assistant athletic director Khalifah Bennett walked onto the field and halted the game "due to sportsmanship issues," she said.

No Overbrook players or coaches were involved.

"I'm embarrassed," Edison head coach Paul Kabara said. "I'm in shock. I didn't think it could get any worse."

Kabara said his roster size has dwindled because of injuries and players quitting the team. Edison (Class AAAA Silver) has won one game this season.

"When you're losing, things escalate," he said.

Kabara said he hopes to convince league officials that the team's Thanksgiving game — against visiting Boys' Latin — is still worth having. He also said he will re-evaluate which players will stay on the team.

Class AAA Overbrook was led in the first half by senior running back Maurice Jarmon. The 5-8, 153-pound running back, had 187 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the first half. A shoulder injury forced him from the game just before halftime, with Darius Johnson's 2007 single-game school rushing record (254) within reach.
