N-G's Toplyn going to Campbell U
Neumann-Goretti High forward Tony Toplyn became the school's second basketball player to pledge allegiance to Campbell University (N.C.) when the 6-6 forward committed to the school Tuesday morning.
Toplyn, a long-armed player adept at running the floor and blocking shots, will join N-G teammate Troy Harper, who committed to the Fighting Camels in October.
Saints head coach Carl Arrigale said Toplyn visited the school last weekend and felt strongly enough to make a decision.
"I think they're getting a steal down there," Arrigale said today over the phone. "I think he has a chance to be a really good college player and his style of play really fits that conference."
The Camels employ an up-tempo style in the Big South Conference.
"Troy is an excellent athlete with explosiveness; he has a good sense for the game as well," Campbell head coach Kevin McGeehan said in a statement. "He has played at Neumann-Goretti on state championship and nationally ranked teams, so he has faced high level high school competition. I think he will thrive playing for us with space and freedom to make decisions and read what the defense gives him."
McGeehan, along with assistant coaches Chris Clark and Dan Geriot, have ties to the Philadelphia area.
McGeehan coached at Lansdale Catholic and Springfield High. Clark played at St. Joseph's Prep and later at Temple. Geriot earned Delaware County Player of the Year honors as a senior at Springfield High.
