Signing day roundup: Seniors make decisions in Pa. and South Jersey

Cheltenham High's Jack Clark felt at home when he set foot on the La Salle campus.

"It just felt right when I first walked on the campus," said Clark, a basketball standout who plans to sign his national letter of intent with La Salle on Thursday. "I felt really connected with the coaches and players."

Wednesday was the start of early college signing day for sports other than football, soccer, and boys' water polo.

The 6-foot-7, 185-pounder, who plays AAU ball for Philly Pride, chose the Explorers over Dayton, Massachusetts, Penn State, and South Florida.
Clark averaged about 18 points per game last season while helping Cheltenham go 19-8, place fourth in the PIAA District 1 Class 6A playoffs, and advance to the state tournament.

Staying close to home was a big factor in Clark's decision.

"I've always been a homebody and wanted to stay local so my parents and sister can still come to all of my games," Clark said.

He went on to say that La Salle's basketball team felt like his "brotherhood."

St. Joseph's Prep forward Ed Croswell also has committed to La Salle.

Camden High basketball star Myles Thompson knew from the start that St. Francis (Pa.) was the right fit for him.

"I took my tour of the school and loved it," Thompson said Wednesday, which marked the start of the early college signing period for sports other than football, soccer and boys' water polo. "The players there give 100 percent effort on the court."

The 6-foot-5 Thompson averaged about 17 points and 11 rebounds per game last season while leading Camden to the South Jersey Group 2 title.

Unfortunately, the state championship game resulted in another devastating loss for the Panthers. After a West Side turnover in the final seconds, Camden had a chance to tie the game. But Thompson's layup wouldn't go as Camden suffered its fifth straight loss in the state final.

Thompson will be heading to a St. Francis team that's on the rise. The men's basketball team was selected first in the Northeast Conference preseason coaches' poll for the first time in school history. The Red Flash appeared in the NEC title game last season for the first time in 26 years.

Thompson's connection to St. Francis assistant coach Umar Shannon played a role in his decision.

Ultimately, Thompson picked the Red Flash because of the team's commitment to him.

"St. Francis was the first school to give me a scholarship," said Thompson. "They kept in constant contact with myself and my family."
