Maggie Pina scored 31 points Sunday as Academy of Notre Dame knocked off Mount St. Joseph, 58-41, at Thomas Jefferson University to give coach Mary Beth McNichol her 500th career victory. Mandy McGurk added 18 points.
In her 27th season, all at Notre Dame, McNichol has compiled a 500-253 record to go along with four Inter-Ac titles (1992, 1993, 1994, 1999) and two Pennsylvania Independent Schools state championships (2007 and 2008). She has coached 11 1,000-point scorers and 36 of her players have made college commitments in Division I, II and III programs.
"It's an honor to be in a class with other area coaches that have accomplished this milestone," McNichol said. "I have been extremely fortunate over the years to have great assistant coaches and players."
St. Joseph's Prep boys' basketball coach William "Speedy" Morris notched his 1,000th career basketball victory (high school and college) on Friday. Jenkintown girls' basketball coach Jim Romano earned his 600th coaching win earlier this season.
McNichol played high school basketball at Archbishop Prendergast and went on to play at Villanova, where she is a member of the women's basketball Hall of Fame. She also coached Annunciation CYO basketball for 10 years.
