Tuesday's Pa. roundup: Souderton girls beat Easton to reach state quarterfinals

Megan Bealer scored 22 points as the Souderton girls' basketball held off Easton, 55-41, in the second round of the PIAA Class 6A playoffs on Tuesday. Drexel recruit Kate Connolly added 16 points for the Indians, who were coming off a win over Manheim Township.

Souderton, which made it to the semifinals last year, will play Neshaminy in Friday's quarterfinals. The Redskins advanced with a 43-37 decision over Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Elsewhere in Class 6A play, Dayna Balasa notched 14 points as Upper Dublin beat Garnet Valley, 39-29. The Cardinals, who stunned Catholic League titlist Cardinal O'Hara in double overtime in the first round, will face Abington in the quarterfinals. The Ghosts got past Freedom, 63-55, behind Kassondra Brown's 19 points.

Garnet Valley's Emily McAteer was limited to just 11 points after scoring 28 against Elizabethtown last Friday.

In Class 3A action, Alana Swift led a balanced attack with 18 points as Imhotep Charter beat North Schuylkill, 65-58. Averi Jordan finished with 33 points for North Schuylkill. The Panthers will take on Dunmore in the quarterfinals.

Boys’ Basketball

Michael Smith and Brian Randolph III had 11 and 10 points, respectively, but Chester fell to Abington Heights, 49-48, in the second round of the PIAA Class 5A playoffs. Jackson Danzig ended with 21 points and scored the game-winner for Abington Heights with 24 seconds remaining.

Chester had a chance to win the game after Danzig missed the front end of a one-on-one, but Randolph was unable to score.

Carson Curry netted 22 points as Plumstead Christian defeated Sullivan County, 67-50, in a Class 1A second-round game. Kyle Elton ended with 15 points for the Panthers, who will play Faith Christian on Friday.

Landon Coyle recorded 18 points in Faith Christian's 66-43 victory over District 4 runner-up Millville. Charles Ervin added 15 points.

In Class 4A action, Donte Scott had 13 points in Imhotep Charter's 44-32 triumph over Scranton Prep. Next up for the Panthers is Middletown, which took down Overbrook, 47-45, on Ryan Hughes' steal and layup in the final seconds.

Ice Hockey

Alex Fox scored in overtime as Downingtown East advanced to the Class 2A Flyers Cup final with a 2-1 win over Conestoga at Ice Line. Jack Barton also found the back of the net for the Cougars, who got 15 saves from goaltender Matt Shandler.

Joe DeLaurentis and Tyler Boylan had two goals apiece as Central Bucks South rolled to a 7-2 victory over Council Rock South.

Downingtown East and CB South will play for the title on Thursday at Hatfield.
