Friday's South Jersey roundup: New Egypt upsets Florence on penalty kicks

Highlights from Friday's sports in South Jersey.

The New Egypt boys' soccer team upset No. 3 Florence on Friday, winning on penalty kicks, 5-4, after extra time ended in a 2-2 draw in the Central Group 1 quarterfinals. Cody LaCava hit the game-winning shot in the sixth round of penalty kicks. It was redemption for LaCava, who hit a penalty kick over the crossbar midway through the second half. Chase Sempervive and Jonathan Olivera scored for New Egypt in regulation. The 11th-seeded Warriors will face No. 2 Asbury Park in the semifinals Tuesday.

Washington Township got goals from Arturo Serano and Josh Strickon to edged Howell, 2-1. Mike Pagano made four saves for the Minutemen, in the South Group 4 quarterfinal win. No. 2 Washington will face No. 3 Shawnee on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Dan Goodson scored the game-winner for Shawnee in the final two minutes of action as the Renegades downed No. 11 Southern Regional in South Group 4 action. Goodson's goal came off an assist from Devin Ribeiro.

No. 4 Rancocas Valley topped No. 12 Millville in a shootout, 4-2, after a scoreless 100 minutes in the South Group 4 quarterfinals. The Red Devils did not allow a shot on goal during the match. Goalkeeper Nick Mulkay made a save on Millville's first penalty kick and the Thunderbolts missed their third kick.Rancocas Valley made four of its five kicks from the spot with Tyler Marlin scoring the winner.

Teddy Davis and Daniel Norcross tallied a goal each in the second half to lead No. 4 Hammonton past No. 5 Delsea, 2-1, in South Group 3 quarterfinal play. Hammonton will face top-seeded Ocean City in the semifinals on Tuesday.

Chris Snyder struck in the first half as No. 5 Haddon Heights held off No. 4 Haddon Township, 1-0, in South Group 1 quarterfinal action. John Taylor picked up the assist and Connor Rink made 12 saves for the Garnets.  Haddon Heights will take on No. 1 Glassboro on Tuesday in the semifinals.

No. 8 Atlantic City upset top-seeded Jackson Memorial, 2-1, in the South Group 4 semifinals. Shadrach Asadu and Duy Luong each notched a goal in the second half for the Vikings. Atlantic City will face No 4. Rancocas Valley in Tuesday's semifinals.

Field Hockey

Kara Heck scored a hat trick to lead top-seeded Eastern to the South Group 4 title. The Vikings topped No. 2 Shawnee, 8-2. Amanda Middleman and Tara Somers score twice each and Jessica Maute chipped in one goal in the win.

Caroline Barlow scored the only goal of the match as Lenape edged Rancocas Valley, 1-0, in the Central Group 4 championship. Kristen Adams made 17 saves for Rancocas Valley in the loss.
