The gutsy Red Foxes drew offensive fouls and scrapped with a bigger, more physical Ohio State team, shocking the heavily favored Buckeyes, 67-63, last night in a Dayton Regional game played in Stanford, Calif., to reach the second round for the first time in school history.
Julianne Viani made six three-pointers and finished with 24 points as Marist (28-5) upset a No. 4 seed.
It was a monumental night for the little-known Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, which had been 0-21 all-time in the tournament before the Red Foxes put the league on the map in the school's third NCAA trip in four years.
Middle Tennessee 85, Gonzaga 46 - Middle Tennessee (30-3) flashed, trapped and ran like crazy. The Zags (24-10) never had a chance in their NCAA tournament debut.
Chrissy Givens moved up yet another spot on the school's scoring list with 24 points, and the fifth-seeded Blue Raiders easily kept the nation's-longest winning streak alive at 27 games with a win in Stanford.
Oklahoma 74, Southeast Missouri State 60 - There's more to the Sooners than Courtney Paris. Just enough, it turns out, for third-seeded Oklahoma (27-4) to hold off No. 14 Southeast Missouri State (24-8) in Austin.
Marquette 87, Louisiana-Lafayette 58 - With a fast start in front of almost empty arena, Marquette was off and running past the Ragin' Cajuns.
