Prep races in spotlight at Parx Racing

There will be more than a million dollars in purses Monday in prep races for the Pennsylvania Derby and the Breeders' Cup at Parx Racing.

The Smarty Jones Stakes will serve as a prep for the $1 million, Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 21.

The Turf Monster, the track's top turf sprint race, at five furlongs on the grass, is a barometer for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

The Greenwood Cup is the track's top long-distance race run at a mile and a half on the main track.

The Turf Amazon will be contested by some of the best female turf sprinters in the country.

Heading the 10-horse field for the $350,000 Smarty Jones Stakes are Micromanage and Uncaptured, who won the $500,000 Prince of Wales stakes at Fort Erie last month.

Ben's Cat has won the last two editions of the $350,000 Turf Monster. The 7-year-old has won 22 of 33 career starts and amassed nearly $1.6 million in earnings. His top rival could be Chamberlain Bridge, who won the race in 2009 and 2010 and went on to win the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2010.

The $200,000 Greenwood Cup field will be headed by Pool Play, who has won more than $1.2 million in his career.

The Turf Amazon is led again by Sensible Lady, who has won 9 of 18 lifetime starts.
