Chitre, Panama, beats Kennett Square for the Senior League World Series title

Panama's Chitre pulled out 2-1 victory over tenacious Kennett Square on Saturday in Bangor, Maine, to win the Senior League Baseball World Series title.

Panama's Chitre pulled out 2-1 victory over tenacious Kennett Square on Saturday in Bangor, Maine, to win the Senior League Baseball World Series title.

Chitre L.L. scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and held on in a tense seventh to beat the Pennsylvania squad, which had romped over Pearl City, Hawaii, 9-4, in the semifinal. The 2-1 score was the lowest in a Bangor World Series title game.

Kennett Square almost pulled it out, getting its first two batters on base in the bottom of the seventh. A sacrifice bunt and two strikeouts, however, ended the threat.

Unlike previous Latin America teams, Chitre did not have an overwhelming offense: Its 6-0 win over Clear Ridge L.L. of Chicago on opening day was its highest-scoring game. And on Friday, Chitre needed 12 innings to get by Martinez, Ga., 5-4, in the semifinal.

Brooklawn advances

Brooklawn, which finished second at the American Legion World Series a year ago, is again on track - ripping Burnsville, Minn., 8-1, Saturday in Shelby, N.C.

Brooklawn got eight shutout innings from righthander John Murphy and scored five runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

The win puts the New Jersey state champions in Sunday night's winner's bracket showdown against Gonzales, La., which beat Wilmington, N.C., 6-5. Burnsville will fight to stay alive at 1 p.m. Sunday against Petaluma, Calif.

Petaluma held off Branford, Conn., 6-3, and Waipahu, Hawaii, beat Napoleon, Ohio, 9-5.
