The Brookers (5-1) got a strong performance on the mound by ace starter Mike Shawaryn, who pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight. John Theckston went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, while Nick Cieri and Sean Breen each knocked in two runs as Brooklawn scattered 17 hits.

Petaluma earned its way into the final with an 8-2 win over Waipahu, Hawaii, earlier in the day.

Petaluma handed the Brookers their only loss of the series, 14-4, on Monday.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Sammamish, Wash., beat Nashville, 6-5, and Panama edged Taiwan, 8-7, in Little League World Series elimination games in South Williamsport, Pa. The Czech Republic beat Grosse Pointe, Mich., 5-3, in a consolation game.

TENNIS: Serena Williams will be seeded No. 1 at the U.S. Open. The U.S. Tennis Association stuck to the WTA rankings in announcing the 32 seeded women, including Victoria Azarenka at No. 2, and Maria Sharapova at No. 3. Williams is one of three seeded Americans; No. 16 Sloane Stephens and No. 24 Jamie Hampton are the others.

American Mardy Fish retired because of heat stroke during the third set of the Winston-Salem Open with Jarkko Nieminen. He was leading, 7-5, 6-7 (3), 3-2.

NHL: Anaheim Ducks defenseman Sheldon Souray will be out four to six months after undergoing surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist.

NBA: The Cavaliers signed Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, to his guaranteed rookie contract. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal can be worth up to $22.8 million over four years.

WNBA: Elena Delle Donne scored 24 points as the Chicago Sky moved closer to their first playoff berth with a 79-73 win over the host Washington Mystics.
