According to the Baseball Hall of Fame, the first known use of a memorial patch on a baseball uniform was in 1876 when Tom Miller, a catcher for St. Louis, died during the season from a kidney disease. The team wore a "badge of mourning" for 30 days.
Since Richie Ashburn's death in 1997, the Phillies have worn numerous patches, mostly to honor former members of the organization upon their death. When Ashburn died, the Phillies wore a black armband on the jersey sleeve with Ashburn's No. 1 on it.
A brief history of recent patches:
In 2003, the Phillies wore a patch to commemorate the final season at Veterans Stadium.
In 2004, the Phillies wore three patches: Two were on the right sleeve, a red ribbon with "POPE" inscribed to honor former manager and executive Paul Owens. Underneath that was a green shamrock that said "TUG" to honor former pitcher Tug McGraw. On the left sleeve was a patch to commemorate the opening of Citizens Bank Park.
In 2007, the team wore a small black circle on the right sleeve with "VUK" inscribed to honor former player and coach John Vukovich.
Last season - the only time a patch was worn on the chest - honored broadcaster Harry Kalas. The black circular patch had "HK" on it.
Yeah, it's been a while
The first-ever two-hit shutout Jamie Moyer threw was Aug. 16, 1986. Twenty-four years later, Moyer did it again Friday night.
In 1986, he was a member of the Chicago Cubs and faced the Montreal Expos at Olympic Stadium. Who did the Expos start? Floyd Youmans, who was traded to the Phillies three years later.
Andre Dawson batted cleanup for Montreal that day. He went 0 for 3 against Moyer. This summer, Dawson will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
