DETROIT - Jeremy Bonderman allowed one run in 62/3 innings for his first win in two months, Brennan Boesch and Johnny Damon each drove in two runs, and the Detroit Tigers earned a split of a day-night doubleheader with a 7-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.

Damon was 3 for 5.

Chicago won the first game, 12-2, as Juan Pierre homered for the first time in almost two years.

Bonderman (6-6) allowed five hits, walking one and striking out five.

Detroit took a 1-0 lead in the first on Boesch's bases-loaded fielder's choice grounder.

The Tigers made it 5-0 while batting around in the second. Alex Avila's RBI double into the left-field corner plated the first run, Will Rhymes hit a two-out, run-scoring single, and Damon and Boesch each had two-out, run-producing doubles.

Blue Jays 8, Yankees 2

NEW YORK - Ricky Romero baffled suddenly slumping New York for the second time this season, and free-swinging Toronto belted four more home runs in a romp.

Alex Rodriguez failed to hit homer No. 600 for the 12th consecutive game.

The Yankees could have used a big hit, too. They have lost three straight for the first time since June 16-19 and now find themselves peering over at Tampa Bay atop the AL East.

Romero (9-7) worked quickly and efficiently against baseball's highest-scoring team, allowing just two hits - a two-run homer by Mark Teixeira in the first and an infield single by Marcus Thames in the fifth. He retired the final 15 batters in the complete-game victory.

Travis Snider and Jose Bautista hit two-run homers, and Vernon Wells and Aaron Hill also went deep for the major leagues' top home-run hitting team. Bautista's homer was his ninth since the all-star break and his 33d of the year, by far the most in the majors.

Orioles 6, Angels 3

BALTIMORE - Buck Showalter's difficult task of turning around last-place Baltimore began with a victory.

Luke Scott hit a two-run homer and Josh Bell added a two-run double for his first major-league RBIs in a big sixth inning, and the Orioles came back to beat Los Angeles to make Showalter 1-0 as Baltimore's manager.

It was Showalter's first game as a skipper since the end of the 2006 season, when he was with the Texas Rangers. He's the third manager of 2010 for Baltimore, which is a majors-worst 33-73, and drew a roar from the Camden Yards crowd of 16,723 simply by jogging out of the dugout to clarify a call with the home umpire.

The Orioles had lost three consecutive games and eight of their past nine.

Jeremy Guthrie (5-11) went seven innings, allowing three runs and five hits. The righthander has now won two of his last three starts.

Red Sox 3, Indians 1

BOSTON - Mike Lowell hit a two-run homer on the first pitch he saw after coming off the disabled list, Josh Beckett dominated for eight innings, and Boston beat Cleveland after a bench-clearing incident.

The Red Sox won on the day first baseman Kevin Youkilis went on the 15-day disabled list with a thumb injury.

But the spirited Youkilis was on the field in the eighth inning when the benches emptied. A pitch by Indians reliever Jensen Lewis that sailed behind Adrian Beltre started things. Lewis, Indians third-base coach Steve Smith, and Beckett were ejected.

No punches were thrown, though Smith and Red Sox manager Terry Francona got into a heated exchange.

Bill Hall added a solo homer for Boston. Lowell, who had been on the DL since June 24 with a strained right hip, was expecting to be traded at the July 31 deadline or possibly released the last day or two before he was activated
