'Dome run' lifts Twins past Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Jason Kubel's two-out pop-up clanked off a catwalk high above Tropicana Field and fell near the pitcher's mound for a go-ahead single in the ninth inning, a true dome run that sent the Minnesota Twins past the Tampa Bay Rays, 8-6, on Thursday.

The Rays had scored six times in the eighth, capped by pinch-hitter Jason Barlett's grand slam that made it 6-all.

In the ninths, Minnesota put runners at the corners and Kubel lofted his pop. Second baseman Reid Brignac got in position to catch the ball on the back of the infield dirt, but it struck the highest metal catwalk - about 190 feet over the field - and changed direction, landing about 15 feet behind the mound.

By rule, the ball was in play and there were no arguments or discussions.

Orioles 5, Angels 4

BALTIMORE - Cesar Izturis singled in the winning run in the ninth inning, and Baltimore remained unbeaten under new manager Buck Showalter.

Since Showalter made his debut Tuesday, Baltimore has won three in a row and scored 20 runs. Before his arrival, the Orioles had lost 14 of 17 and were averaging 2.77 runs per game - second-lowest in the AL.

Matt Wieters led off the ninth with a double off Francisco Rodriguez (0-3). After Julio Lugo took third on a bunt by Corey Patterson, the Angels packed the drawn-up infield with six players.

Izturis then lined a single up the middle, sparking a wild celebration by the Orioles around first base.
