Head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said the 2010 NL rookie of the year had two screws inserted into his lower left leg, which was broken in the play.

Later this month, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa will become the second to manage 5,000 games. Former Philadelphia A's owner/manager Connie Mack managed 7,755.

Hairston suspended

Nationals third baseman Jerry Hairston was suspended one game and fined an undisclosed amount Sunday for making contact with umpire Ed Hickox during a game against the San Diego Padres. Hairston has appealed.
