Baseball Notes: Eddie Yost dies at 86; was player and coach

BOSTON - Eddie Yost, 86, nicknamed "The Walking Man" because of his penchant for drawing bases on balls during an 18-year major- league career, has died.

The Boston Red Sox say Yost died Tuesday morning in Weston, Mass., but did not announce a cause.

After his playing days, Yost was a third base coach for the Red Sox, New York Mets, and Washington Senators.

Primarily a third baseman from 1944 to 1962, Yost drew 1,614 walks - a total that still ranks 11th all-time. He spent his first 14 seasons with the original Senators, garnering all-star honors in 1952, and also played for the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels.

The Red Sox say Yost is survived by his daughters, Felita and Alexis, and son Mike.

Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran left Game 3 of the NL Championship Series with a strained left knee.

The all-star rightfielder exited after grounding out in the first inning and Matt Carpenter took his place in the second. St. Louis said Beltran was day-to-day.

It was not certain how Beltran got hurt. He appeared to move slowly down the line after grounding out.

Brian McCann's agent said the Braves catcher expected to be "completely healthy" for the 2013 season after surgery on his right shoulder.

McCann's rehabilitation could last six months, so his status for the opening month of next season is uncertain. The Braves, meanwhile, must decide this month on their $12 million option on McCann for 2013.

Tuesday's surgery repaired McCann's torn labrum. The Braves said the tear was larger than expected.

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed Marlins outfielder Scott Cousins and Yankees pitcher Cory Wade off waivers.

The Boston Red Sox claimed Marlins righthanded reliever Sandy Rosario off waivers and designated outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin for assignment.
