Baseball Notes: Arizona to sign Ross for 3 years

Outfielder Cody Ross and the Arizona Diamondbacks agreed Saturday to a three-year, $26 million contract with a club option for 2016. Ross, who turns 32 on Sunday, batted .267 with 22 home runs and 81 RBIs last season with the Boston Red Sox. The deal gives Arizona four veteran outfielders - Ross, Justin Upton, Gerardo Parra, and Jason Kubel.

Ross, who turns 32 on Sunday, batted .267 with 22 home runs and 81 RBIs last season with the Boston Red Sox. The deal gives Arizona four veteran outfielders - Ross, Justin Upton, Gerardo Parra, and Jason Kubel.

He was claimed off waivers by San Francisco in August 2010 and was the MVP of that year's NL Championship Series, when he hit .350 with three home runs and five RBIs against the Phillies. He also homered against Texas in the World Series.

Ibanez to Seattle

Free agent Raul Ibanez and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract, a source told the Associated Press on Saturday. The deal allows the former Phillie and Yankee outfielder to earn an additional $1.25 million in performance bonuses.

Bosox deal for closer?

The Joel Hanrahan trade rumors heated up Saturday, with ESPNBoston.com reporting that the Pittsburgh Pirates were close to shipping their 31-year-old all-star closer to Boston.

Ryan Freel dies at 36

Former MLB utility player Ryan Freel, 36, was found dead from a self-inflicted shotgun blast Saturday in his home in Jacksonville, Fla., authorities said. Freel was selected by Toronto in 1995 and played made his major-league debut with the Blue Jays in 2001. In his last season, 2009, he played for the Blue Jays, Orioles, Cubs, and Royals.
