Baseball Notes: D'backs, Ziegler come to terms

The Arizona Diamondbacks have avoided arbitration with closer Brad Ziegler by agreeing to a two-year, $10.5 million contract with the righty reliever.

Ziegler revealed the agreement via Twitter, saying he's "really excited to stay in Arizona for a couple more years, at least."

Under the contract, the sidearm pitcher gets $4.5 million for 2014 and $5 million for 2015 with a $5.5 million option for 2016 that includes a $1 million buyout.

Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Troy Patton has been suspended for the first 25 games of next season after a positive test for a banned amphetamine.

The Orioles will not be signing free-agent closer Grant Balfour. Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette says that the club was not satisfied with the results of his physical exam.

A person with knowledge of the deal told the Associated Press the Minnesota Twins and catcher Kurt Suzuki have agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract.

The Oakland Athletics have signed first baseman Daric Barton to a one-year contract, avoiding salary arbitration with their longest-tenured player. Also, the A's claimed catcher Chris Gimenez off waivers from Tampa Bay.

The San Francisco Giants have designated for assignment lefthander Eric Surkamp, clearing roster room for the addition of newly signed outfielder Michael Morse.
