The 21-year-old Fernandez was the National League rookie of the year last season. He is 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA in eight starts this year.
Several young pitchers recently have had elbow problems and needed Tommy John surgery. Matt Harvey, Stephen Strasburg, and Patrick Corbin are among the all-stars who have had the ligament-transplant operation that can take 12 to 18 months for recovery.
"That's probably what everyone is going to talk about and continue to talk about," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said Monday.
The Marlins recalled lefthander Dan Jennings from triple-A New Orleans. He made 79 relief appearances for the Marlins over the previous three seasons, going 3-5 with a 2.96 ERA.
No ruling on brutality
A federal jury in Houston deadlocked on a brutality claim by former Astros pitcher Brandon Backe, who had sought millions in damages after accusing police of causing career-ending injuries when they broke up a 2008 wedding party.
Backe, 36, and his attorneys said they would seek a retrial of the unresolved claims. However, "I can hold my head up high. It has been six years since the beating and I was able to tell my story," the righthander said.
The jury did rule that four Galveston, Texas, police officers used excessive force to break up the party. Nine officers were suspended without pay and four received written reprimands after the Oct. 5, 2008, incident at a bar at the San Luis Resort and Conference Center.
The jury awarded nearly $50,000 in damages in the lawsuit against the four officers. Backe, who helped the Astros to the 2005 National League pennant, said the plaintiffs were beaten by officers responding to reports of rowdy partygoers at an outdoor bar.
Puig hearing scheduled
A hearing was set on a motion by attorneys for Los Angeles Dodgers star Yasiel Puig to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a Cuban man blaming the player for his imprisonment and torture on the communist island.
The hearing will be Friday in Miami in front of U.S. District Court Judge Kathleen Williams. In the lawsuit, Miguel Angel Corbacho Daudinot claims he was falsely accused by Puig of involvement in human trafficking and has been subjected to torture in Cuban prisons.
Puig has denied that.
Blue Jays moves
Toronto recalled infielder Jonathan Diaz and righthander Chad Jenkins from triple-A Buffalo.
Catcher Erik Kratz was optioned to Buffalo, and righthander Sergio Santos was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sore elbow, retroactive to May 10.
Later, outfielder Colby Rasmus left Monday's game against the Angels after six innings with tightness in his right hamstring.
