WASHINGTON - Considering the alternative, Phillies rookie lefthander Mario Hollands feels extremely fortunate. Hollands was placed on the 60-day disabled list Friday with a Grade 2 flexor strain in his left forearm. Righthander Sean O'Sullivan had his contract selected from Lehigh Valley and will be available on Saturday.
Hollands had an MRI and an ultrasound on Thursday. He said no tears were discovered, so there will be no surgery. But he won't even pick up a baseball for about six weeks.
"I am relieved I don't have to have surgery," Hollands said before Friday's game against Washington. "It is not as bad as I thought it might be."
Hollands' last appearance came during Wednesday's 7-4 loss in Atlanta. He entered in the beginning of the fifth inning and took the loss, allowing one run in 2/3 of an inning. Holland threw 17 pitches.
He said he expects to be ready by spring training.
Overall, it's been an eventful season for the 26-year-old Hollands, who made the team out of spring training after being a non-roster invitee.
This season, he went 2-2 with a 4.40 ERA. In 50 relief appearances covering 47 innings, he struck out 35 and walked 21.
Asche's progress
Cody Asche wasn't in the starting lineup. It's been an up-and-down first full season for the 24-year-old third baseman. Asche, who hit .235 in 50 games last season for the Phillies, entered the weekend hitting .250 with nine home runs, 43 RBIs, a .696 OPS, and 88 strikeouts in 382 plate appearances.
"This being his first full year, he is working on how teams pitch him and making adjustments at the plate," Sandberg said.
