Cole Hamels placed on DL, won't face Phillies this month

The former Philadelphia ace has suffered an oblique strain.

CHICAGO - The Phillies will miss a chance to face Cole Hamels later this month as the Texas Rangers placed the pitcher on the disabled list with an oblique strain.

Hamels had a 3.03 ERA this season in five starts with 15 strikeouts and 12 walks in 32 2/3 innings. The former Phillies ace is 24-6 with a 3.38 ERA in 49 starts with Texas since being traded by the Phillies in the summer of 2015. His numbers with the Rangers are similar to his stats over 10 seasons with the Phils.

The Phillies will visit Texas on May 16 for a three-game series. It looked as if  Hamels' spot in the rotation would fall on one of those days until he was scratched from Tuesday night's start. Hamels is expected to miss eight weeks.
